You can text me, you can call me,

You can email, you can chat,

Early morning, late at night,

right here is where I'm at.

I'm available anytime, prepared to do my part

Here at the drive-up window of my heart.

All across this great and mighty nation

More and more time is spent in communication

People who once manufactured cars and thermostats

Are now uploading pictures of their cats.

Hours spent online posting posts

Trillions of words per hour coast to coast

A flood of words flowing on wi-fi

From computers manufactured in Shanghai.

Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, Google Plus

All these little shrines devoted to us

Five hundred pictures of me and the missus

And links to websites that reflect my prejudices

And updates on what I've done today

The linguini that I ate for lunch

That was pretty much okay

And how the restaurant was not that crowded

And will we read this years from now, I doubt it

I remember how it used to be

Long-distance phone was for an emergency

Otherwise you sat and wrote with pen or pencil

A few hundred words that felt essential

Or you had a few friends in to dine

You only had a few friends, not 2,039

And if you'd started showing movies of your cats

They'd have stood up and reached for their hats

You can text me, you can call me,

You can email, you can chat,

Early morning, late at night,

right here is where I'm at.

I'm available anytime, prepared to do my part

Here at the drive-up window of my heart.
