TR: THE LIVES OF THE COWBOYS....brought to you by Colorado Springs.....the mattress that gives you a more restful sleep out on the trail-----
(HORSES' HOOVES)
TR: Well, here we are. Cripple Creek, Colorado. I got no idea why we are here but here we are.
GK: I know. It's crazy. But I had to see her one more time.
TR: Evelyn Beebalo. I'm sick of hearing about her. You and her broke up long ago. Get over it.
GK: Just want to lay eyes on her one more time.
TR: Why? Find someone else.
GK: There is no one else.
TR: Then marry her.
GK: Can't. I'm not the right one for her.
TR: Cause you're a cowboy.
GK: Right.
TR: And because you're a cowboy you're lonesome all the time and that's why you can't forget her.
GK: That's it.
TR: That is a vicious circle.
GK: Well, let's head for the saloon, Dusty. Get this over with.
TR: I thought she ran the library.
GK: The library is above the saloon.
(MUSIC BRIDGE)
(INTERIOR BAR)
SS (BARMAID): Okay, boys. Welcome to the Cripple Creek Saloon. Belly up to the bar. Just remember I got four rules. No shooting in the saloon. No spitting. If you fight, there's no throwing the other guy over the bar. And no riding a horse into the saloon. Okay? What can I bring you?
TR: Bring me a bottle of your best rotgut whiskey.
SS (BARMAID): You want single rot?
TR: Fine.
SS (BARMAID): You, sir?
GK: Sarsaparilla with a cherry.
SS (BARMAID): Pardon me?
GK: Sarsaparilla with a cherry.
SS (BARMAID): Sarsaparilla with a cherry!!!???
(FOOTSTEPS, SLOW, HEAVY)
FN: I believe I heard someone order a sarsaparilla with a cherry. Am I right or did I just imagine that?
GK: I ordered it.
FN: Sarsaparilla with a cherry.
GK: That is correct. I just happen to like the taste of it.
FN: You're not from around here are you.
GK: I'm a cowboy. I'm not from around anywhere.
FN: I never knew a cowboy to order a sarsaparilla with a cherry. Sarsaparilla with a lemon, yes. Sarsaparilla with a walnut, maybe. Sarsaparilla with a cherry, no.
GK: Well, life has just provided you with a new experience, mister.
(FOOTSTEPS)
SS: Hi Billy. Sorry I took so long. Had to lock up the library.
FN: That's okay, sweetheart. It was worth the wait.
GK: Evelyn!
SS: Lefty---- it's you.
GK: Good to see you, Evelyn.
FN: What's going on here?
SS: What brings you to Cripple Creek?
GK: Wanted to come and see you.
SS: Well, I'm honored.
FN: What is going on here???
GK: How've you been?
SS: I like it here. For the most part.
GK: Beautiful mountains.
SS: I got the poem you wrote for me, by the way.
GK: Oh good.
FN: LISTEN TO ME. WHAT IS GOING ON HERE?
SS: I loved the lines----
When my body and your body lie
Under a white cotton sky
And your pale radiance shines
Moving this heart of mine.....
And ---- well, you remember the rest of it.
FN: He wrote you that? Huh?
GK: So is this guy your boyfriend now?
SS: I love you, Lefty. But you weren't ready to settle down. So I've moved on. I didn't want to move on, Lefty. But you weren't ready----
GK: You did the right thing.
SS: Have you moved on, Lefty?
GK: I'm doing my best, Evelyn.
FN: Hey, you.
GK: Me?
FN: You. The Sarsaparilla Kid. What you doing with my girl? Take your hand off her.
SS: He's a friend, Billy.
FN: Only a friend?
SS: Only a friend.
GK: Only a friend??? Evelyn-----
SS: A good friend. A beautiful friend.
FN: You and me, Evelyn--- we make quite a pair. You've made me very very happy. Last Saturday night especially. Boy O boy O boy.
SS: Oh hush. So you're still on the road, huh?
FN: You talking to me?
SS: I'm talking to Lefty.
GK: Still on the road. Like a tumbling tumbleweed.
SS: Oh I love that song. We used to dance to that song. Remember? In Durango that time?
GK: I remember that night. The night of shooting stars.
FN: Funny you should mention shooting----
SS: It was in the fall and we were drinking a bottle of red wine and that little cowboy band The Drifters was playing....
GK: And we wrapped our arms around each other and we slow danced around and around.
SS: In the cigarette smoke and the neon glow and the faces of all those people----
GK: All those people looking at us. Remembering what it was like to feel that way.
SS: HEY JOE. PLAY "TUMBLING TUMBLEWEEDS" ON THE JUKEBOX.
GK: I love this song.
FN: No dancing. You hear me? No dancing.
TUMBLING TUMBLEWEEDS
SS: I love you, Lefty. I'll always love you.
FN: I heard that. Get away from him. (GUNSHOTS)
SS: DON'T SHOOT YOUR GUN AT THE CEILING!!! MY LIBRARY IS UP THERE! You idiot!
FN: I don't care about books. (GUNSHOTS)
SS: DON'T SHOOT THE BOOKS.
FN LAUGHS
(SHE SWINGS, KONK. FN GROANS AND FALLS)
TR: Hey, you decked him. Billy the Kid. He's down for the count. Way to go, lady.
GK: I never saw you hit anybody before, Evelyn.
SS: You better go before he wakes up.
GK: Goodbye. Hope to see you again.
SS: I hope so too. Soon. Very soon. (WESTERN THEME)
