I went down to Fredericksburg,
Virginia, on Tuesday
Where U.S. Grant in '65
Engaged the boys in gray.
I rented a car in Fredericksburg
To drive to Charlottesville
And stop and see the battlefields
So peaceful and so still.
I walked the woods where Ewell's line
Turned back the Union charge
And the soldiers scattered, and they turned,
And began the homeward march.
You can see the earth embankments
You can almost hear them cry,
Lying there in the grass
Faces to the sky.
Then I tipped my hat to U.S. Grant
And I bowed to Robert E. Lee
And I pulled out of the parking lot
And headed down Highway 3.
Had the radio on and the window open
And spring was in the air
And the bloom was on the dogwood
And the wind was in my hair.
In Minnesota I was born in
But I love a southern morning
Driving down the old Plank Road
Going to Charlottesville
(INST)
I've been living the indoor life
Looking at a p.c. screen
Isn't this the finest spring
You have ever seen?
Winter's over.
Winter's over.
Winter's over
Winter's over.
(INST)
I fought hard all winter
Been fighting since the fall
Charged up the hill a dozen times
Ran into the wall.
You guys can fight on if you like
For the glory and the thrill
I am heading down the old plank road,
Down to Charlottesville.
Slow down, I think I will
The road ahead is clear
Heading down to Charlottesville
And spring is finally here.
The war is over
The war is over
The war is over
The war is over
The war is over.
